MPD Drilling Technology Drivers

The ORS MPD technology is a technology that caters for all phases of drilling and well construction and can be used throughout the life of the field, from exploration drilling to P&A.
The main driver for MPD technology today in subsea field development, is being
able to drill through formations which will cause excessive time, cost and risk
with conventional methods. The root cause for this and the increasing need to
find effective solutions to the problem on the continental shelf, is pressure
depletion due to production. This causes the drilling window (the difference between
formation pressure and the formation fracture pressure) to decrease. New and more
effective methods are needed in order to maintain and increase the production
potential from fields.
In deeper waters new and more effective solutions are required in order to manage
the annular pressure profile in the wellbore in order to mitigate the smaller
and naturally occurring drilling window in more shallow (closer to sebed ) formations.
Further, drilling through salt and in geo-pressured regimes requires faster, more
accurate and flexible methods for management of the annular pressure profile. The main driver in deep waters is often the staggering high well costs with
conventional
drilling methods.
